Diatom Samples

Diatom Lab offers STATE-OF-THE-ART MICROSCOPE SLIDES produced using the INNOVATIVE, NEW, NEVER PUBLISHED, UNIQUE, PROFESSIONAL, MODERN, LATEST DIATOM LAB'S TECHNIQUES AND FORMULAS! (PLEASE READ ALL THE TECHNICAL INFORMATIONS IN THE HOME PAGE) You'll have the BEST CONDITIONS FOR EXCELLENT RESOLUTION AND CONTRAST, for example Diatom frustules are attached / fixed to the UNDERSIDE of a PROPERLY THICK COVER GLASS  (and not commonly on the microscope slide!), although this procedure requires special manufacturing precautions! Furthermore, mounting to the underside of the cover glass permits to easily use oil immersion objectives too (even those with very short free working distance, such as 63x/1,4 or 100x/1,4) as there is no space between diatoms and cover glass!

The scientific laboratory company has an unbelievable number of worldwide samples to choose from: you can order several diatoms or radiolarians arranged in series or in artistic patterns (ask for a free quote). But Diatom Shop offers also strewn microscope slides: in this case diatoms or radiolarians are uniformly distributed; moreover you will never find unpleasant edges caused by distilled water evaporation.

Diatom Shop always offers many rare and unusual species! It also offers microscope slides with micro-manipulated Diatoms and Radiolarians for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), carefully fixed without cover glass and mountant in this case!

All microscope slides are made in Diatom Lab's internal laboratory by Stefano Barone (microscope slide preparer, science educator and scientific photographer): the products offered are professionally prepared, moreover a lot of money, research and technology have been invested to realize and keep alive this company!

And now some brief informations about Diatoms: they are unicellular algae, but it is a restrictive definition, in fact most people ignore that they give us a good part of the oxygen we breathe! Diatoms live in many different aquatic environments and their appearance dates back to the Cretaceous. They are enclosed within a cell made of silica called frustule: its form radiates a stunning beauty and is unique for each species. But their importance does not end here: they are food for many living thinks, whether small (such as protozoa) or gigantic (the whales). Moreover diatoms are water quality indicators. Last but not least, in the past abundant acumulations of diatoms caused the formations of a special kind of rock called diatomite, which is nowadays mainly used for the manufacture of toothpaste, abrasives, cat litter, light weight bricks, insulations and water filters. In conclusion: long life to diatoms!
You can understand how the microscope slides offered have several values: scientific, ecological and artistic too!

An interesting fact: why do some Diatom appear colored without any stain? Download this article: link.

Please visit the Price List page to obtain the PDF INSTRUCTION MANUAL of the "DIATOM RESOLUTION TEST PLATE, Version 2.0", for dry and oil immersion objectives, with diatoms attached / fixed to the underside of the cover glass in order to ensure maximum resolution and contrast! In Diatom Cubed mountant. This test microscope slide contains the following species: Stauroneis phoenicenteron (for Dry objectives), Gyrosigma attenuatum (for Dry objectives), Gyrosigma reimeri (for Oil immersion objectives), Navicula oblonga (for Homogeneous Immersion System = Oil immersion objective and Oil immersion condenser), Pinnularia nobilis (for Homogeneous Immersion System = Oil immersion objective and Oil immersion condenser).

Diatom Lab has thousands of different species inside the laboratory!
Diatom Lab cannot sell raw diatom samples because of the company's classification, but can prepare microscope slides with its cleaned samples or with the (already cleaned or uncleaned) samples you provide.
WANTED: material from exotic locations. Exchange for slides of material supplied!

Santa Fiora, Tuscany, Italy

Freshwater fossil

This EXTREMELY RARE diatomite deposit was initially studied by Ehrenberg in 1838. The mines have been all walled up - destroyed around 1970! Visit the Price List Page to see Ehrenberg's beautiful drawings! Freshwater fossil diatoms from Santa Fiora have been initially described in: Ehrenberg Christian Gottfried, Die infusionsthierchen als vollkommene organismen. Ein blick in das tiefere organische leben der natur, Leipzig, L. Voss, 1838
